If you notice that your lawn looks uneven or the grass blades look ripped, rather than cleanly cut, after mowing, this is a sign that your lawn mower needs sharpening.

Do I need to drain my mower of petrol before having the blades sharpened?

Nope! Your mower blades can be sharpened regardless of how full the tank is.

Do I need to bring in my whole mower or can I just bring the blades for sharpening?

For best results, bring the whole mower so that the blades can be reset and balanced. This service is called a “sharpening and set”.

How do I know if my chainsaw needs sharpening?

Look out for the following to know that your chainsaw is in need of sharpening:

  • The chain does not pull itself into the wood, it has to be forced to cut by applying pressure to the chainsaw
  • When crosscutting, fine sawdust is produced from the cut instead of coarse, thick chips of wood
  • There is smoke when cutting, even though the chain is well lubricated and the chain is tensioned correctly
  • When cutting there is a pull toward one direction – this means there are dull cutters on one side of the chain or irregular cutter lengths
  • The saw chatters and bounces during the cutting instead of pulling itself into the wood

How often does a chainsaw need sharpening?

If your chainsaw has been used on sand, dirt, rocks or nails, it will need sharpening immediately.

As a rule of thumb with general use on wood, you should inspect the chain for damage after each time you use your chainsaw and sharpen the chain each time you refuel your chainsaw.
